ART & DESIGN

Year 7

Aims:

To encourage students to develop their creativity and imagination through a range of activities which help them to build on and improve their practical and critical skills.

Content:

Students extend their knowledge and experiences of materials eg observational drawing, painting, ceramics and textiles. They are taught to engage confidently and imaginatively with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures, eg ceramic tiles, colour-mixing skills and textiles inspired by Bridget Riley. They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings e.g. discussion, research, compositions and written reviews.

Grouping Arrangements:

Form groups, mixed ability

Homework:

Once a week, relating to project.

Assessment:

Ongoing and at the end of each project.

Additional Information:

  • Students will need to bring a pencil to all lessons.
  • Art packs are available at a cost of £10.
  • Pottery donation £1
  • Textiles donation £1 gratefully received.

 

Year 8

Aims:

They are taught to engage confidently with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures. They work on the theme 'Art from other cultures', exploring shape, pattern and texture.
They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings e.g. in discussion, research, compositions and written reviews.

Grouping Arrangements:

Small, mixed ability groups in a rotation system.

Homework:

Once a week, relating to project.

Assessment:

Ongoing and at the end of each rotation.

Year 9

Aims:

  • Exploring and developing ideas
  • Investigating and making art, craft and design
  • Evaluating and developing work
  • Knowledge and understanding

Content:

Students are encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination through a range of activities in our three discrete studios, which help them to build on and improve their practical and critical skills and to extend their knowledge and experiences of materials e.g. observational drawing, painting, ceramics and textiles.

They are taught to engage confidently with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures focusing on the theme ‘the human form'.

They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings e.g. in discussion, research, possible compositions and written reviews.

The artwork itself must also look "DIVINE!"

Assessment:

Years 10 & 11

The Art and Design Department offers specialist GCSE courses in Fine Art, Textiles and 3D Design.

The grades awarded for these examinations are based on:

  • The completion of two units of coursework = 60%
  • A final timed test = 40%

In each specialist area students are given the opportunity to gain knowledge of a wide range of appropriate materials and processes.

Assessment Objective 1:

  • Observational drawing
  • Recording experiences and ideas
  • Secondary source material

Assessment Objective 2:

  • Evaluating and analysing objects and artifacts
  • Understanding context


Assessment Objective 3:

  • Develop and explore ideas through media, processes and resources


Assessment Objective 4:

  • Final piece, looking at the work of artists to help influence your work

All four assessment objectives have equal weighting and should be addressed in both units of coursework and the final examination.
