Geography

At MVC geography helps students make sense of the world around them by developing their enquiry skills - investigate.pngencouraging questioning, investigation and critical thinking about issues affecting the world and people's lives, now and in the future.

Geography helps develop successful learners who can suggest solutions to local and global issues.

Geography helps inspire students to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and the sustainability of the planet.

Year 7 enquire into the following topics:

  • Where in the world are places like this?
  • Where will I live?
  • Is global warming really altering the world's weather?
  • How does our UK weather & climate affect us?
  • How and why are regions of the UK so different?
  • How has the expanding EU affected the UK?

Year 8 look into a number of issues and focus on a range of areas and scales. They will look into the following topics:

  • Is tourism good or bad?
  • Adventurous landscapes.
  • Is your local area a crime hotspot?
  • Why do rivers and coasts need so much management?
  • Africa: A challenge or crisis?

In year 9 the following topics are studied at a range of scales giving opportunity to understand human and physical processes and see how they are interlinked or interdependent:

  • Is globalisation good or bad?world.png
  • Can we plan for hazards such as Tsunamis?
  • Is Antarctica really under threat?
  • How has Japan succeeded against the odds?
  • What is the impact of China's rapid development?

The GCSE course (WJEC Spec B) is designed to help students understand how geographical influences and relationships link people and their surroundings and how the environment can be protected. It helps them to understand and appreciate the cultures and backgrounds of people from all over the world and how this might affect their quality of life. It promotes an issue based, investigative approach The emphasis is on problem solving and enquiry throughout and will include opportunities for students to learn about the world around them through fieldwork. Students can also draw on their own knowledge and experiences of places.
