    Year 7

    Aims:

    To encourage students to develop their creativity and imagination through a range of activities which help them to build on and improve their practical and critical skills.

    Content:

    Students extend their knowledge and experiences of materials e.g. observational drawing, painting, ceramics and textiles. They are taught to engage confidently and imaginatively with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures, e.g. ceramic tiles, colour-mixing skills and textiles. They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings e.g. discussion, research, compositions and written reviews. Students will work in their MVC Artist Sketchbook which will enable them to develop and easily review their progress. It will act a record of their artistic development. The SKETCHBOOK must be brought to every lesson. Students will also have the opportunity to produce larger scale artwork, textiles and pottery outside the sketchbook.

    Once every two weeks, relating to project.

    Ongoing and at the end of each project.

    Year 8

    Aims:

    They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings e.g. in discussion, research, compositions and written reviews.

    Mixed groups.

    Termly: Large research project developing knowledge and understanding of other artists and cultures.

    Assessment:

    Aims:

    Exploring and developing ideas

    Investigating and making art, craft and design

    Evaluating and developing work

    Knowledge and understanding

    Content:

    Students are encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination through a range of activities which help them to build on and improve their practical and critical skills and to extend their knowledge and experiences of materials e.g. observational drawing, painting, and textiles.

    They are taught to engage confidently with art, craft and design in the contemporary world and from different times and cultures focusing on the theme 'the human form'.

    They become more independent in using visual language to communicate their own ideas, feelings and meanings e.g. in discussion, research, possible compositions and written reviews

    This process is designed to clarify the ability levels of students and their potential to take on the rigors of GCSE. HW is used to show independent learning skills, which are required to become a successful GCSE candidate

    Project work is designed to prepare students for GCSE and to further develop all pupils' core skills in Art, Design and Textiles.

    KEY STAGE THREE ASSESMENT LADDER OF ACHIEVEMENT

    All Keystage three pupils will assess their project work using the KS3 Curriculum Level Ladder. Each project will end with pupils reviewing their work and assessing what they have achieved. They should continue to progress up the ladder of achievement as they progress through each year group.

    NATIONAL CURRICULUM LEVEL LADDER

    Level 8 (gifted and talented)

    Choose pictures and information to help you with your ideas. Understand how images and symbols might be viewed differently depending on the context of the art work. Research information and present it visually and in other ways. Take advantage of the different things that materials can do, in order to get a particular meaning, mood or visual effect in your work. Understand and evaluate the context of your own and other peoples' work, identifying links between your own work and their work. Learn from other artists and improve your work as a result of research into artist's work.

    Level 7 (showing exceptional ability at key stage 4)

    Discuss your ideas confidently using art terms. Your ideas are selected, organised and presented in different ways, depending on who it is produced for. Use many different materials in a range of projects that enable you to develop and extend your ideas. Reflect on and be inspired by other artists.

    Level 6 (moving towards above expectations at key stage 4)

    Explore ideas: make judgements about the pictures and information that you use to develop your ideas including pictures from different cultures, social groups and different times in history. Use materials in a skilful way and evaluate the outcomes of experiments. Use art to communicate ideas and meanings, using things such as colours and symbols. Discuss, judge and describe the work of other artists and recognise how work is produced in different ways.

    Level 5 (target Yr 9)

    Explore ideas and select the best pictures and information to help you with your chosen idea. Know what your art, craft or design work is to be used for and show that you are thinking about who will be looking at it. Describe and show that you understand the context behind other artist's work. Make your work better as you do it, making sure people who view it understand its meaning and purpose.

    Level 4 (target Yr8)

    Explore a range of ideas, collect pictures and information that will help you develop your own ideas. Understand how a range of art materials work and use them to get the effect that you want. Understand the techniques and ideas behind your own, and other artist' work.

    Level 3 (target Yr7)

    Explore an idea given to you, collecting pictures and information to help you with it. Investigate different methods of making your own work, discuss which is best and then produce final piece.

    Discuss and describe the work of other artists and say how they inspire your work ideas

     

    Years 10 & 11

    The Art and Design Department offers specialist GCSE courses in Fine Art, and Textiles.

    The grades awarded for these examinations are based on:

    • The completion of coursework portfolio = 60%

    • A final timed test = 40%

    In each specialist area students are given the opportunity to gain knowledge of a wide range of appropriate materials and processes.

    Assessment Objective 1:

    Develop their ideas through investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and cultural understanding

    • Evaluating and analysing objects and artefacts

    • Understanding context

    Assessment Objective 2:

    Refine their ideas through experimenting and selecting appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes.

    • Experimenting with a variety of media, ideas and processes

    Assessment Objective 3:

    Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions in visual and/or other forms.

    • Observational drawing

    • Recording experiences and ideas

    • Develop secondary sources ideas and artwork

    Assessment Objective 4:

    Present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating analytical and critical understanding realizing intentions and where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral or other elements

    • Producing a final piece, looking at the work of artists to help influence your work

    • Making connections across all areas of research and artwork

    • Reviewing and refining work

    • Evaluating final piece

    All four assessment objectives have equal weighting and should be addressed in both units of coursework and the final examination.

    Examination Board: Edexcel.

    Homework is continual and should be at least 2 hours a week. Work is reviewed by the teacher throughout the course. All students are graded according to the GCSE Art and Design assessment Grid for both units. Targets are set according to the matrix.

    All students need to buy a sketchbook for Year 10 and another for Year 11

    The Department offers Textiles and Art packs for purchase at cost price to students. It is highly recommended that students purchase one in order to do Homework.
